Kerbside recycling changes

Aerosols can no longer be collected in council kerbside recycling

From 1 February 2024, all council household recycling services must accept the same standard set of materials. Unfortunately this change saw empty post-consumer aerosols excluded - a decision that flew in the face of international best practice.

Aerosol cans are made from steel and aluminium which are both infinitely recyclable materials.

The Aerosol Association of New Zealand is working with stakeholders like the Food and Grocery Council and the Association of Metal Recyclers on finding a safe and sustainable solution that allows New Zealanders to once again ensure that this valuable resource can be recovered and reused by future generations.

Please keep checking back here for updates about aerosols and recycling.

In the meantime there are other options for you to recycle your empty aerosol cans. (Note that aerosols with contents still inside are Hazardous Waste - check with your local Council to see how to safely dispose of them.)
